# 002 — Why a billion.

It is not a growth target. It is a filter — and it kills most of what I would otherwise spend my life on.

A billion is an absurd number to say out loud when you are at zero. I know how it reads. But I did not pick it to sound impressive — I picked it because of what it does to my calendar.

A number that big is a filter. It rules things out. Most of what I could build would top out long before it. If the ceiling of an idea is a few thousand people, it is not wrong, it is just not this. Naming the number forces me to ask, honestly, whether the thing in front of me could ever scale to it — and to stop pretending small, comfortable work is the same as the mission.

It also protects me from a quieter failure: building something that grows and means nothing. Reach without substance is just noise at volume. The number and the substance have to travel together or the number is worthless.

So the goal stays written down where I can see it. A billion lives. Not a billion views, not a billion impressions — lives, actually changed. I am aware of the gap between that sentence and my current position. That gap is what this log documents.

**Takeaway:** A goal you can't reach with your current plan is doing its job — it tells you the plan has to change.
